Ladies and gents, Ani. Yes, I know about her name (both the kanji and the usual meaning of "ani".) I'm three weeks from a B.A. in Japanese. It's deliberate, trust me.

Ani was deposited at a monastery at age ten. Her mother probably thought it was a normal monastery. Her mother was also sadly mistaken. An order of souhei, or warrior monks, they were a little-known faction mainly utilized as assassins by the warring powers. (The ability to detach from all worldly concerns is quite useful when someone needs to be taken to the cleaners.) The monks were trained in some performance art - singing, dance, mastery of an instrument, etc. - as well as a complementary fighting style. Ani was taken in, discovered to be a terrible performer in any kind of musical setting, and subsequently assigned to the acrobats. At age 20, she was turned out of the monastery, citing a) a complete failure to master detachment, and b) the fact that as a woman, she was a distraction to the monks.

What happened after that is anyone's guess.
